Myofascial Decompression
What is it and who can benefit from it?
The mechanism of how Myofascial Decompression (MFD) or Cupping Therapy works is very simple, yet its effectiveness for musculoskeletal pain and tension can be quite impactful.
MFD can treat soft tissue conditions, musculoskeletal tension, pain and sports injuries. During treatment, a physical therapist puts plastic cups on your skin to create suction on the skin, muscles and fascia. This creates space between the layers of tissue, allowing them to move more efficiently and with less restriction. It is usually combined with active motion patterns to train your body to work in the newly established range of motion more efficiently.
How can it help me?
Loosen muscles.
Balance out muscle tension.
Improve mobility
Increase blood flow to slow healing muscle tendons or ligaments
Reduce scar tissue formation
Release trigger points and decrease tightness in a muscle and the surrounding fascia
The great thing about myofascial decompression is it is generally safe for all populations and the benefits can be seen and felt quickly.
As with all physical therapy interventions, there are some patient populations that are not advised to perform this type of treatment. Please follow up with one of our Physical Therapists to see if you are a candidate for Myofascial Decompression.
